FUNEHUMOR NEWS
& ANNOUNCEMENTS
This is where we will post anything that has to do with site outages, problems, slowness,
virus warnings... basically anything that would affect the performace or operational aspects
of our web site. If there were anything that we felt you should know, this is where it would
be, so if you feel something has not been working correctly, the site's been slow, etc. then
check here first and see if it is mentioned. If not, feel free to email us!
We will also use this page for announcements about new features on FunEHumor.com!
System Update - Site Outage & Issues
March 21st, 2009 - This notice is to inform you that, if you visited this site between
March 1st, 2009 and March 20th, 2009, there is the possibility that your machine was infected
with a trojan or some other form of malware. We believe the site became infected on or about
March 8th, but are taking the extra precaution of issuing this warning for a full week prior
to that date. We know the infection was removed on March 19th, at some time in the evening,
which is also why we're including the time period through the 20th, just to cover all bases.
While any malware is bad, and we regret that this breach was able to have occured, the trojan
in question is relatively easy to remove and most current virus and spyware cleaning engines are
already aware of it and would have stopped it on entry to your machine. This was not a new
or previously unknown trojan, and therefore we are relatively certain that, if you had active and
up-to-date scanning software, you should have been well protected. This is simply an acknowledgement
that such an incident did take place and all efforts are being made to prevent future attacks.

On Sunday, May 6th, and for the next 2-5 days, we will *finally* be migrating our
domain to a new server farm. Yes, we've been talking about this for several months. There
was a lot to consider in the timing, but it's happening as I type this and there is no
turning back. At this time, all email issues and mailing list problems
have been addressed and corrected, but yes, for the past 24 hours, many were unable to join or
unsubscribe from the list, and some probably missed today's mailings. This domain migration
is also affecting several other areas of the public site, including our ability to update
pages or fix problems as quickly as we normally would. Rest assured, we are doing everything
by the numbers, with the ultimate goal being to avoid as much down-time as possible...
The good news in all of this is, once completed, we will have increased our
bandwidth capacity TWENTY FIVE TIMES what it's been (not percent... I said *TIMES*)
and our hard drive capacity will go from 150 MEGABYTES to 5000 MEGABYTES (5GB)
All in an effort to bring you more of the greatest humor content on the web!
UPDATE POSTED ON May 13th... for the past week, a few areas have been down or behind...
as of tonightl, the "Recommend Us To Others" script is working again, and daily and
weekly mailings are fixed (supposedely) so they'll be on-time once again (I hope)
The "Site Survey" is still not working, but I think that's the last of it. Let me know
if anything else isn't working as it should. Thank you!

This morning, from at least 7:AM (it was earlier, but my ISP isn't being very forthcoming for
some reason about how long things had been down) and until around 8:AM EST, the site was
unavailable entirely. Now, they may not be telling me anything whatsoever, but I can tell you it
was either a massive DNS issue (like their DNS servers both went down) or they lost their
connection to the internet for some reason. I can say this so confidently because I have three
different domains in that network operation center, and they all live on different servers;
one on a dedicated, fail-dafe type server, two others on standard servers (but different than
each other) in addition to email servers for all three domains, and a database server for our
mailing lists. And ALL of those were unreachable, in addition to my ISPs own web site. So there!
All seems to be back up and fully stable since, I just figured it wouldn't be right not to post the outage.

Starting tomorrow, January 18th, and for the next 7-14 days, we will begin migrating our
domain to a new server farm. This change will affect ALL areas of the site, including
our ability to send and receive emails, update pages or fix problems as quickly as we
normally would. Rest assured, we are doing everything by the numbers, with the ultimate
goal being to avoid ANY down-time... but the potential is there for the site to be
slow or outright missing for periods of time, links to not work, scripts to not function
properly and email to not work. The good news in all of this is, once completed, we will
have increased our bandwidth capacity TWENTY FIVE TIMES what it's been (not %... TIMES)
and our hard drive capacity will go from 150 MEGABYTES to 5000 MEGABYTES (5GB)
All in an effort to bring you more of the greatest humor content on the web!
ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTE: This migration never happened...

At some point in the next 3-4 months, we're going to be upgrading our servers.
Yesterday morning (3/26/05) at roughly 6:AM, the company that FunEHumor.com uses to host
our domain suffered a catastrophic server farm failure. One or more of their machines
began mass-deleting thousands of domains / web sites. All data was backed up, so now that
our site is back up it should be exactly as it was previously, but the restore process
took time as they literally had thousands of sites to bring back online in an orderly
fashion. A great deal of time was also spent making sure it didn't happen again once all
was returned to the way it was. In the end, it simply means the site was down for Easter
weekend. The only real issue is, since email accounts were also deleted, and down for longer
than 24 hours in our case, there's a good chance most emails during the outage are gone and
never to be seen again. We do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and we
appreciate your patience and patronage.

At some point in the next 3-4 months, we're going to be upgrading our servers.
The details are still at the "very-sketchy" stage, and MUCH planning remains to be done, but
the end result is this... our monthly bandwidth capacity should end up being 4-6 times higher
to serve the site's continued and future growth. We'll also be adding a virtual TON of hard
drive space (mainly because it's so darn cheap these days) which will allow us to do more with
funny pictures / images, which right now we try to limit due to the space restrictions. It may
also allow us to start doing humorous VIDEO CLIPS. More to come as the details become clearer!

Apparently, for some time now, the anonymous feedback survey for the website
has not been functional. I discovered this by accident yesterday and have now confirmed that my
web hosting company decided to upgrade security by changing the way any forms on their servers
work. That's great news as it cuts down on spam, but it would have been nice if anyone thought
to mention that my existing forms would stop working. The other cheerful piece to this is...
I have no idea how long ago it stopped working. But it's fixed now...

Yes, it's true... today we experienced the longest amount of down-time that we've
had to deal with in many, many months... if not longer. The short version is this... there was a
fairly large fire near the data center where our site is co-located, and the fire marshall thought
it best to shut down the entire city electrical grid for a few hours. Once everything was restored,
it was up to 3 phone companies to restore their internet backbone connectivity, and we all know
how fast phone companies work. Anyway, we are very sorry for the lack of service, but there was
literally nothing we could do about it.

Due to decreased use of the FunEHumor Chat Room, coinciding with increased
hosting costs, the chat room will be suspended as of this evening. If you feel the chat room
is a feature that you would like to see return to FunEHumor.com in the future, please
email me. If I get enough feedback maybe I'll bring it
back, but for the time being, it is a thing of the past. The rest of the humor site will remain
unchanged, and best of all, completely free!

During the evening of September 17th, our servers experienced a complete
shutdown due to an emergency situation in our Network Operations Center. An electrical fire in
the 3rd floor of the building caused the building to be evacuated. In order to protect the
rescuers from possible electrocution, all power sources were disconnected or powered down.
Despite the risk, 4 of the NOC personnel stayed behind during the evacuation to do an orderly
shutdown with the supervision of fire dept personnel. After the emergency was controlled,
local gas & electric personnel arrived on scene and cleared the building to be powered up
again. Our personnel then began a systematic reboot of our servers. We apologize for any
inconvenience this shutdown may have caused.

On May 22nd we were very happy to announce a software upgrade to enhance our
OS on our servers. This upgrade did not take place yet due to technical issues that arose
during testing. The Operating System upgrade is currently planned for next Thursday evening,
July 24th. This will ensure our web servers will have the latest in functionality, security,
and stability. The anticipated downtime should be about 1-6 hours between 12AM and 6AM EST.

This was originally scheduled for last week around this time. We've
simply rescheduled the upgrading of our server's operating system for tonight / early
tomorrow morning. This upgrade ensures that our web servers will have the latest in
functionality, security, and stability. The anticipated downtime for the site should
be about 1-3 hours, and will occur between 12:AM and 6:AM, EST Friday morning.

Earlier today the major back-bone provider that our host uses was down
for a while. We apoligize for any inconvenience this may have caused you in accessing
our site.

We plan to upgrade the Operating System on your server next week.
This will ensure our web servers will have the latest in functionality, security,
and stability. These upgrades are currently scheduled for next week...
Monday night / Tuesday morning, May 19th. The anticipated downtime should be about
1-3 hours, between 12:AM and 6:AM, EST.

We've noticed that for those of you on our mailing list who can only
receive standard text emails (as opposed to HTML email) the longer jokes sometimes get cut
off before the end. We're happy to report, that problem has now been rectified! We
apologize for any inconvenience this has caused in the past! If you receive HTML emails
(evident by a blue background to the email) this issue did not affect you.

We've made it even easier to find the funny images / photos on the site.
Now there's a link right on the HUMOR MENU that appears on the left side of every page
that will take you right to the picture section of the site, instead of having to go
through each individual section like you did in the past.

Two bugs/flaws were fixed today; one fairly major, and one minor!
For some time now, our site has been slowing down in stages, making it unbearable for people
with slower 'net connections. This turned out to be due to the RATINGS we've put next to each
item, so you can see what other's thought of it before clicking the link. The only problem is,
as more documents get rated, the slower the site loads. Now, when you click on a humor
category, only the 5 newest document's ratings show, unless you specifically ask for more.
The speed of the site has increased tremendously... you will notice the difference if haven't
already. Next, we changed the way images load when their links are clicked. Previously,
if you clicked on a link that pointed to an image, it opened using a javascript window.
The problem is, Javascript seems to work so much differently on various platforms, so it
was causing a problem for people, many of whom got the pop-up window just fine, but it was
sized incorrectly, so the image itself would open far too small to tell what it was.

After several months "leave of absense" and not making a whole lot of
changes to the site, we're back, and we have a very long list of things we're going to make
better this year! We start with a new mailing list structure. As of today, we have
three mailing lists, not just one. You can now get jokes sent to your email address
DAILY or WEEKLY, in addition to the normal list which notifies you when NEW content gets
added to the site. Find out more on our
Get Free Email Updates page.

As of this morning, we have broken the Men & Women humor section into two
separate pages. It was getting much too long and taken people with older modems too long to
load, so now, after the list of the first 50 or 60 documents, you'll get a link to the next
50 or 60. We have also reworked the JOKE ARCHIVE section to make it easier to get around.

As of tonight, when you read a humor document or go to any
page on FunEHumor.com, the link to that page will become black. In the past, we have
left the links on the site the standard blue, mainly to keep the site looking as clean and
uncluttered as possible. But, due to the high volume of repeat visitors that we get, as
well as the sheer number of links now offered on FunEHumor, there is also a great advantage
to using a different color for links that have been visited. Basically, we've decided
to slightly sacrifice appearance so that when you come back a week or two later,
it's easy to spot what you've already seen! Thank you to those who suggested this type
of change over the past months.

We have fixed a problem that some of you were experiencing which caused the
site's search engine to send you to a page with only the humor content, but no menus, logos,
navigation tools, etc. The site search engine will now bring you to a properly displayed
page.

FunEHumor.com is now officially available in 32 languages. On each
page you will see a drop-down box containing all of the currently available language
translations available. Once you translate to another language, each page after that
loads in the new setting, so you do not have to translate every page you go to. Just
do it once and you're set until you leave the site.

As of this morning, the new rating system has been officially rolled out
and is working as planned. Now, when you're reading humor on this site, you can
"rate" it and the rating will appear on the link pages where it also shows the
length and cleanliness of the document, so you'll know what other people thought of it
*before* reading it.

As of this morning, the new version of FunEHumor.com has been officially
rolled out and is being tested. There may be some minor bugs that go unnoticed for a
few days, but for the most part, the web site layout and functionality have been entirely
changed. Here is what we've done to make the site better for you...
1) All humor content has been pushed a bit to the left. This fixes
most of the problems with all common printers where data would get cut off on the right.
2) All pages and menu systems have been cleaned up to make the site easier
to navigate. We've also added a few options to enhance the site.
3) We replaced the software that we were using to allow you to send
something funny that you find to a friend. In the past, all your friend got in the
email was a link to our home page... now, the software will send a link to the exact page
that contains the joke or humor document that you are looking at.
4) We've added a "search" box to every single page on the site
to make it even easier to find what you like.
5) We also added the "panic" button to every single page... we
received reports in the past that some pages didn't have it... problem solved!
6) The back end of the site and the way the pages are created has been
changed. Now, my server does most of the page building and loading before throwing
it to your computer, mainly because my server can do it faster than your computer.
The end result... a faster web site!
7) Many visitors have been asking what happens with their personal
information when I ask for it for things like my mailing list. We now have an
official online privacy policy posted.
8) A chat room has been added for your enjoyment!
9) Did I mention the site is still free?
